Curriculum

The Nursery Curriculum

We follow the N.I. Curricular Guidance for Pre-School Education.

The Curriculum in nursery schools is delivered through play. These carefully planned play activities will help your child reach his/her full potential in the following six areas of the curriculum:

1 Personal, Social and Emotional Development
2 The Arts (Art, Drama, Music etc.)
3 Language Development
4 Physical Development and Movement
5 Early Mathematical Development
6 The World Around Us

The children will participate in play activities, which are planned around a theme/topic each
month. We send home song and rhyme sheets and information about our current topic. We
would encourage you to follow our suggestions and explore these with your child. Each day
your children are encouraged to be actively involved in the following areas of play:

Play with natural materials e.g. sand, water, clay and dough

Children enjoy the sensory experience of handling these materials. This provides
opportunities for the development of gross and fine motor skills and hand/eye co-ordination.
Children learn to interact with each other, to take turns and to share.  Staff participate in play to ensure that appropriate vocabulary is used and new vocabulary introduced.

Concepts such as full/empty, heavy/light are developed and children are encouraged to make close
observations and use a variety of different tools.
